For most Australian businesses, the Essential Eight is not legally mandatory. It is a recommended framework created by the Australian Signals Directorate to help organisations improve their cyber resilience. Many businesses choose to adopt it because it is practical, effective and aligns with insurance, compliance and tender requirements.
However, in some sectors Essential Eight is mandatory or strongly enforced. Federal government departments and certain government contractors are required to implement specific maturity levels, particularly for systems that handle sensitive information. State government agencies may also adopt similar requirements depending on their internal policies.
Outside government, Essential Eight is increasingly becoming an industry expectation. Cyber insurers often require evidence of controls like MFA, patching and backups before offering coverage. Larger organisations may also require suppliers to meet baseline security standards. So while not legally mandated for most businesses, Essential Eight is becoming an important competitive and compliance factor.
